The association (Peace Bell Society Berlin e.V.)
The Peace Bell Society Berlin e.V. has been founded on 7th October 1999 in the tea shop and tea room "Oblomow" in the district of Berlin Prenzlauer Berg. The founders were brought together by the wish to reawake the peace bell in the prople’s park Friedrichshain. They wanted to bring the bell’s message of peace and the banning of nuclear weapons back into public conciousness.
In memory of the victims of the nuclear bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (6th and 8th August 1945), the Peace Bell Society organizes an annual peace meeting where the peace bell is rung in the traditional ceremonial way. The association tries to gain the attention, the peace bell deserves to receive from the city of Berlin for being a monument and memorial for peace.
One task of the Peace Bell Society is to care for the temple, the bell and the surrounding park area.
At peace demonstrations (e.g. the Easter march) and other public peace events, the society carries out the message of the peace bell into public.
The society also has the goal to cause solidarity and to promote international understanding and peace love by its educational work. One form is to hold speeches in schools or to help to obtain the history and meaning of the folding of paper cranes by practical activities. Around the International Childrens Day, on the 1st of June, the children ring the peace bell and let fly balloons with the chains of cranes they produced themselves.
